IPL 2010 Indian Premier League
Indian Premier League or IPL is the name which has completely swept the cricketing world in only 15 months. The main reason for its importance and success was entertainment. A T20 match hardly takes more than 3 hours to finish. In this fast paced world, people don’t want to wait for 5 days or even a single day for the result of a cricket match. IPL used these facts and made cricket and IPL a household name. As promoted with the tagline “Manoranjan Ka Baap” (father of entertainment), IPL delivered everything that it promised. IPL 2008 and IPL 2009 have been huge hits not only in India, but also outside India.

IPL 2008 Winner
Rajasthan Royals, that surprisingly emerged victorious beating Chennai Super Kings in the 2008 season of IPL, was in contrast considered to be one of the weakest teams of this first season beginning from 18th April. Lacking in an icon player and low auction bids characterized them as losers well before and which got confirmed when they lost their first match in the tournament against Delhi Daredevils by 9 wickets. However, from thereon the tables turned as they came forth with a score of 11-3 in the preliminary round and were the first to enter into semi-finals.
Playing the finale against Chennai Super Kings who scored 163, Rajasthan Royals began a bit wobbly, loosing Neeraj Patel and Kamran Akmal, till Yusuf Pathan (56) arrived on crease followed by a supportive Shane Watson (28) who finished off the match with Sohail Tanvir. Swapnil Asnodkar (28) was a great support too. They needed 8 runs of the last over, which came with a wide delivery by Balaji and a misfield by Parthiv.
But the winning credit, along with the rewards, went undoubtedly to the truly deserving Royals. Shane Watson bagged the Man of the Series Award. Sohail Tanvir received the Purple Cap. Yusuf Pathan was the Man of the Match.
Overall their struggle to triumph was commendable that did shut various mouths!
IPL Winner 2009
Alike the first IPL season (2008), the 2009 tournament also witnessed the emergence of an unexpected winner of the league-the Deccan Chargers! The bottom team in 2008 table was the victor of 2009, an event hard to be guessed by anyone beforehand. Due to terrorist attack speculation, the BCCI had decided to organize the tournament outside India and, finally after 37 days of hard-core performance, thrill and entertainment in South Africa the D-day arrived on May 25, johannesburg. After a splendid performance in the preliminaries and the early finals Deccan Chargers appeared as a promising winner in the finale, but none could afford to prophesy so as the opponent Bangalore Royal challengers were also at their best.
As expected, the finale was more of a thriller than a one-sided hitherto. It began with Royal Challengers opting to field first and Kumble’s bagging of the legendary wickets of Gilchrist and Symonds at the start and barring the Chargers at a total of 143/6 justified their decision. Gibbs unbeaten 53 ended up in vain due to lack of support. Despite a good bowling innings, Challengers gave a poor bat start loosing Kallis followed by Manish Pandey, Dravid and others finishing off 139/9 short of 6 runs. The cricket crazy fans witnessed a nail-biting finale with Man of the match- Anil Kumble(RC) and Adam Gilchrist(DC).
IPL Sponsors
Even among the hearsays of sponsors pulling out of Indian Premier League, this most awaited ‘million-dollar baby’ never seems to run short of willing sponsors. It maintains a long queue of high-profile patrons that includes the head sponsor, DLF, for $50 millions. Vodafone (telecom) and Hero Honda are official partners for $25 and $22.5 millions respectively. Kingfisher airlines have secured the deal of sponsoring the umpire’s clothes and the 3rd umpire decisions for the duration of 5 years. Pepsi becomes the league’s official beverage sponsor for 5 year term. Sony Max, for $1.026, is named the functionary media partner and broadcaster. Citibank and ITC group has entered into sponsorship agreements for an unrevealed sum. Orbit and Boomer collaborates as prescribed ‘gum’ and ‘bubble gum’ sponsors, severally.
The third-house of sponsors integrates many more of such renowned collaborators like Emerging Media, Shahrukh Khan, Deccan Chronicle, Mukesh Ambani etc. Still the champions of first season, Rajasthan Royals, are out of sponsors! Even Kolkata Knight Riders claims for needs of sponsors forwarding the limitations of its private companies as compared to the public limited’s of GMR, Reliance etc.
Irrespective of mangers’ reassurances of steady deals, the news of pull-outs is always in the air!
IPL Players Prices
Indian Premier League which was organized by Board of Cricket Control in India was one of the most successful leagues in the country. One of the most striking features of this league was the player’s auction. The player’s auction included both national and international players. There were several players who were classified iconic and had to stay with their home teams which included Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid , Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh and others.
In the 2008 player’s auction several foreign and domestic players were in huge demand. Mahendra Singh Dhoni was sold to Chennai Super Kings for a whopping 6 crores of rupees. The franchise owners of Chennai Super Kings also bought Muttiah Muralidharan for $ 600,000 and Matthew Hayden for $ 3,75,000. Kolkata Knight Riders bought the young Indian pacer Ishant Sharma for 3 crores 80 lakhs rupees. They also got Ricky Ponting for $ 400,000 and Brendon Mccullum for $ 700,000 .Delhi Daredevils bought players like A B De Villiers for $ 300,000, Dilshan for $ 250,000, Daniel Vettori for $625,000 and Gautam Gambhir for $ 725,000. Deccan Chargers also gave their money to purchase Adam Gilchrist for $ 725,000, Andrew Symonds for $ 1.35 million, R P Singh for $ 875,000 and Rohit Sharma for $ 750,000.
In the 2009 players auction Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff of England were sold for a whopping 1.55 million dollars to Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Superkings respectively.
IPL Records
Indian Premier League not only changed the way cricket is played, but it also changed the record books to a greater extent. In IPL 2008, Shaun Marsh topped the batting charts with 616 runs at a whopping average of 68.44. Gautam Gambhir topped the half centuries charts with a total of 5 half centuries to his name. Shaun Marsh, Adam Gilchrist, Brendon McCullum, Sanath Jaysuriya, Michael Hussey, Andrew Symonds are the cricketers who can boast of scoring centuries in the inaugural edition. Sohail Tanveer took the most number of wickets and has also a 5 wicket haul to his name. L Balaji, Makhaya Ntini and Amit Mishra were the bowlers who took hattricks. And how can one forget that match of India vs England which witnessed 6 sixes from Yuvraj Singh’s bat in a single over of Stuart Broad.
In the second edition of IPL, which took place in South Africa, Matthew Hayden was the top scorer with 572 runs in his kitty; whereas R P Singh was the leading wicket taker with 23 wickets. Adam Gilchrist topped the number of sixes list with 29 sixes. This year only 2 centuries were hit, one by AB De Villiers and the other by Manish Pandey. With this Manish Pandey became the first Indian to score a century in the IPL. Adam Gilchrist had most number of dismissals to his name. This year three hattricks were taken. The bowlers who did this were Rohit Sharma and Yuvraj Singh. Yuvraj Singh has the credit of taking two hattricks.
